Jan. 22nd, 2004 06:35 amMildly pointless, but it has consumed at least three showers worth of idle thought time. Which means it's time to post it.
I got something very much akin to this from Glynis for Christmas.

The rules enclosed are reasonably vague, implying that the glasses could be filled with candy or some-such. humph. not bloody likely. But, I like this idea. I like all drinking games on principal, despite the fact that I've played maybe 3 in my life. And, oh god, I occasionally forget how ugly those rounds of Dradel ended. Oy.
So i want to throw a party based around this thing, but I would like it to be something other than a pile of people watching Greg and I steady progress towards belligerence. I would like there to be more than one game of checkers, and it'd be nice if people could, you know, walk after it. So then, because I'm a big fat dork, my mind hits on...

if you're not dorky enough to know the card text by heart, or to read through the ancient "why don't we just break things with this expansion" text, the M:tG version of Sharazad has you set aside your current game and start another game of magic, using your same decks. The loser of that game gets screwed. Yes, the card was that broken. Maybe not Chaos Orb broken, but majorly fux0red. But with checkers...
Sharazard Checkers
At the beginning of the game, each playa has the right to fill as many glasses/pieces (interchangeable) with the alcoholic beverage of their choice. Proof is left unspecified, but could be claimed as a house rule. As my goal is to run a 16-seat double eliminator tourney, you can pour all the Coors' Light you'd like. After 9 games, it'll catch up with you.
For any glasses left unfilled, the opponent has the right to place a slip in the glass that specifies another gaming challenge available within the house. This can be any readily available game that has an easily defined competitive mode (either vs. or score), and can finish within 10 minutes. Multiplayer (beyond 2) games are acceptable, as long as specific teams are specified on the slip. Games can be chosen to one player's advantage, but no modifications may be made to the game to create artificial handicaps. (So, Jodi can choose point count on Karaoke Revolution singing "Kiss Me" but she can't blindfold or ball-gag me. Choosing something the other person sucks at is a smart move, not cheating.)
When in play, if a player loses a booze piece, they drink it. If a booze piece is kinged and then taken, they drink double. If a player loses a piece with a challenge in it, the challenge must immediately be played. assuming the offensive checkers player wins (as they selected the challenge), the piece is taken and play continues. If the defensive checkers player wins the challenge (I do practice with the Karaoke once she goes to bed), the offensive player loses their piece.
There's details that don't work yet. What happens to kinged challenges? Should you have to set your booze/challenge layout at the beginning of the tournament, or change at every game? How the hell will I keep that many random games running at the same time? Well, actually, that's not a challenge. That's the point of Game-Day. We've got practice with that.
On a random note, I just found my student's LJ this afternoon. Her LJ name is smogs, which is a bit strange. Now I can't friend her or post real comments to her Lj or she'll find me. Drat. She's flummoxed that she doesn't find my journal by trolling for strange geometry terms. Silly girl.

Date: 2004-01-16 01:28 am (UTC)She's searching for my first and last name, which I rarley use, her real name, and terms about the class I teach.
We chat about this in class on a regular basis, in one of those "most likely kill you in the morning" sort of advesarial relationships. I almsot don't want to tell her I found the journal in order to keep that going.
