Not fuck-up
Jun. 4th, 2004 06:48 pmI'm in the midst of booking several layers of complicated flights and hotels for my trip to NECC, which is my first official activity on Hamlin's dime. Well, it better be on Hamlin's dine, since I'm sure not willing to spend $1000 in airfare and hotels just to hang out in New Orleans.
NECC actually looks like a decent conference, now that I've got the whole conference routine under my belt. It was surprising how similar the survival traits for something like CUE, or CLMS compared to SDCC and KublaCon. Find a few things that look interesting, introduce yourself to all presenters, be friendly at all time, but also honest about what your interests and needs are. If you can tell 20 minutes into a presentation that they're only going to talk about teaching the multiplication tables, or that their Deadlands games will be nothing but comparisons of various gun stats, then get the fuck out of there. Politely, discreetly if possible. But there's few things worse than forcing yourself to sit through a session you don't like, and few things worse for a presenter/DM than seeing people fighting sleep in their audience. Or their game.
So, I'm actually going to a place filled with gators. By myself. What am I going to eat?
